This is an interesting question, and hard to answer objectively, since to name a well-known person may imply an opinion that he or she SHOULD be the most well known. You have set my mind spinning with the possibilities. Dead: Queen Elizabeth, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci. Living: Elon Musk (hélas une fois), Adolph Hitler (hélas deux fois), Donald Trump (hélas trois fois), V. Putin (hélas mil fois), Volodomyr Zelensky (Dieu merci).

Thanks for answering this complicated question! It’s a discussion I had with my brother, we looked for serious polls but it’s hard to find any that are representative of the world’s population. For example, is Albert Einstein known in Bhutan or Tajikistan? Your answers are interesting, for example I hadn’t thought of Leonardo da Vinci. To answer this question, we must ask ourselves if the person in question is known outside of countries that are culturally close to him, is he known in a country with a different alphabet from ours, or in a country that does not have Internet access for example? I don’t think there is a universal answer.

I agree with your comments. There is no privative answer to the question, nor any answer that isn’t bound to the culture of the answerer. I thought of China, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, South America — how can we know who is well known in those populations? The Internet, social media and cell phones are probably contributing to the spread of certain imagery in formerly remote geographies, but it’s difficult to measure that effect. Thanks for posing the interesting question.
