Ce que j'ai pensé du film : Empire of Light (2022) de Sam Mendes. Film touchant, bouleversant. Des moments de poésies dans un cinéma dans les années 80 en Angleterre rattrapés par la tension sociale, le racisme, les skinheads. J'ai beaucoup aimé les plans symétriques et les plans en contre-jours. Il y a un joli travail sur l'image. Olivia Colman est brillante. Hilary est une gérante du cinéma Empire. Stephen est noir et vient de commencer de travailler pour le cinéma. Entre eux deux une relation va naître. Il y a des moments magiques comment quand ils vont à la plage ou quand Hilary lui fait découvrir des salles du cinéma à l'abandon et que Stephen soigne un pigeon. Ou encore quand le projectionniste explique à Stephen quand changer de bobine lors d'une projection. Mais la réalité les rattrape. Hilary surprend Stephen être victime d'insultes racistes. Il préfère qu'il ne se voit plus. C'est un amour impossible. Hilary ne prend sa dose de Valium. Elle déprime, le vit très mal cette rupture. Chaque jour le boss d'Hilary l'appelle dans son bureau pour qu'elle lui donne un handjob voire plus. Plus tard dans le film elle lui dit stop. Au moment de sa crise elle est envoyée dans un centre psychiatrique, elle y a déjà été. Le cinéma va recevoir l'avant-première des Chariots de Feux et fait plein de travaux pour redonner un coup de jeunesse au cinéma. Hilary revient pour cette soirée très exubérante. Elle dévoile son secret avec son boss devant tout le monde et la femme du boss. On y apprend qu'elle est schizophrène. Stephen veut l'aider lors de sa crise. Lors d'une manifestation de skinheads, Stephen est passé à tabac violemment sous les yeux d'Hilary impuissante. Elle va se rendre à l'hôpital pour prendre des nouvelles de Stephen, c'est sa mère qui est infirmière qui lui en donne, elle lui dit aussi qu'il ne a demandé des nouvelles d'Hilary. Suite à ça, elle demande au projectionniste de lui montrer un film, n'importe lequel. Elle travail au cinéma mais n'a jamais vu de film. Elle pleure de joie. Stephen a écouté les conseils d'Hilary et s'est inscrit pour la fac. Hilary est triste mais contente pour lui.What I thought of the movie : Empire of Light (2022) by Sam Mendes. Between them a relationship will be born. There are magical moments like when they go to the beach or when Hilary shows him around abandoned movie theaters and Stephen tends to a pigeon. Or when the projectionist explains to Stephen when to change reels during a projection. But reality catches up with them. Hilary overhears Stephen being the victim of racial slurs. He prefers that he no longer sees himself. It's an impossible love. Hilary doesn't take her dose of Valium. She is depressed, saw this breakup very badly. Every day Hilary's boss calls her into his office to give him a handjob or more. Later in the film she tells him to stop. At the time of her crisis she was sent to a psychiatric centre, she had already been there. The cinema will receive the preview of Chariots of Fires and the employees are doing a lot of work to give a youthful look to the cinema Hilary returns for this evening very exuberant. She reveals her secret with her boss in front of everyone and the boss's wife. We learn that she is schizophrenic. Stephen wants to help her during her crisis. During a protest by skinheads, Stephen is brutally beaten as the helpless Hilary watches. She goes to the hospital to hear from Stephen, it's her mother who is a nurse who gives her some, she also tells him that he hasn't asked for news of Hilary. Following that, she asks the projectionist to show her a movie, any movie. She works in the cinema but has never seen a film. She is crying with joy. Stephen took Hilary's advice and enrolled in college. Hilary is sad but happy for him.
